Hello all,

Just wanted to introduce myself and our new Ghia. We are new to the VW family and hopefully we can participate and learn how to keep our baby running. I'm having a hard time getting her started this spring, so hopefully I can get it sorted before cruise night on the 17th.

Best,

Darrin

Looks nice, what's your engine issue?

Thanks Steve,

I'm not quite sure what the problem is yet. I spent the day tinkering a bit and finally got her to start and took her for a little easy stroll around to loosen her up from the winter rest. Starting is just not a sure thing, and I've been stranded a couple of times last summer. I have been trying to find the correct ritual to get her to start within the first couple of tries. Ultimately, I think it might be a charging issue, but I'm really just starting to get educated. It's a 6V system, so it seems it is much weaker and has to be handled carefully. Like I said, I don't know much other than what I've been reading online. It is one of the reason I'm joining this club, so I can learn from experienced people and hopefully contribute myself at some point.

Best,

Darrin

Hello Darrin and very nice ghia you got there!

With proper maintenance, a 6v system can be just as enjoyable as a 12v.
Having owned a few, I have learned the importance of keeping the ground contacts clean.
A 6v system tends to attract corrosion over time.

I would check each contact throughout the vehicle and disconnect/clean with wire brush or sandpaper, then apply a dialectric grease to keep moisture at bay.

You would be AMAZED at what a difference this will make (especially to the brightness of your lighting).

As far as the starting issues...check and clean the easy stuff first, ie; points, plugs etc...

Regards, Thomas
